Pearl Guide

Discover Freshwater Cultured Pearls

Pearls have been admired for generations for their soft lustre and timeless elegance.

At Srsta Collections, our freshwater pearl jewellery features genuine freshwater cultured pearls.

What Is a Freshwater Cultured Pearl?

A cultured pearl is a real pearl formed inside a mollusc with human assistance during the cultivation process.

Freshwater cultured pearls are produced in freshwater molluscs and should not be confused with imitation pearls manufactured entirely from artificial materials.

What Makes Every Pearl Unique?

Pearls are organic gems rather than machine-made objects. As a result, individual pearls can naturally differ slightly from one another.

These differences are part of their character rather than something customers should necessarily expect to be completely uniform.

When choosing freshwater pearl jewellery, some of the most useful characteristics to consider are:

Pearl Type
Identifies the type of pearl. Our freshwater pearl products are identified as freshwater cultured pearls where applicable.

Pearl Size
Pearl size is generally expressed in millimetres (mm). Larger and smaller pearls create noticeably different looks when worn.

Pearl Shape
Freshwater pearls can occur in shapes including round, near-round, oval and baroque. The shape is specified on individual Srsta Collections products where applicable.

Pearl Colour
Pearls can display different colours and subtle overtones. Product photographs are intended to represent the jewellery as accurately as reasonably possible, although lighting and screens can affect how colours appear.

Pearl Lustre
Lustre describes the way light reflects from the pearl's surface and contributes significantly to its appearance.

Pearl Surface
Because pearls form inside living molluscs, natural surface characteristics can occur. A genuine pearl should not necessarily be expected to look as uniformly perfect as a manufactured imitation pearl.

Pearl Jewellery Length
For necklaces, length is an important part of how the jewellery sits when worn. Where available, approximate necklace measurements are provided on our product pages.

Natural Variation Is Part of the Beauty

No two freshwater cultured pearls need to be exactly identical.

Subtle differences in shape, size, colour, surface and lustre give pearls their individual character. Even within a carefully matched necklace, small natural variations may be visible.
